Your Guide to Monitoring & Improving Your Credit by The Sherman Team at NextHome Foundations

Tackling Credit

Good credit opens doors — from renting an apartment to buying a home. The good news is that improving your credit is often simpler than people think. With the right steps, the right tools, and a little consistency, you can take control of your credit report and move closer to your financial goals.

Here’s a clear, step‑by‑step guide to help you get started.

And if you stick with us to the end, we’ll show you the one step most people overlook — the step that makes this entire credit‑building process feel far less intimidating than it seems

Step 1: Pull Your Free Credit Reports

The first step is knowing exactly what’s on your credit.

You can pull your full credit report from all three bureaus — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — for free at AnnualCreditReport.com. They allow weekly pulls, which is incredibly helpful when you’re actively working on improving your score.

Your report will show:

• All open and closed accounts

• Any derogatory items and accounts

• Payment history

• Collections, judgments, or public records

Half the battle is simply understanding what’s affecting your score.

Weekly access makes it easier to track progress and catch errors quickly, especially if you’re preparing for a major financial step like buying a home.

Understanding your credit early is especially helpful if you’re planning to buy a home, something we cover in detail on our First‑Time Homebuyer Resources page.

Step 2: Identify & Dispute Derogatory Items

If you see accounts that don’t belong to you, items that were already paid, or old accounts still reporting negatively, you can dispute them directly on each bureau’s website or annualcreditreport.com can help you do this too.

Disputes are:

Free

Simple to file

Typically resolved within 30 days

Generally if the credit account holder cannot verify that the debt is valid within that 30 day timeframe from when you file a dispute, the item must be removed. This is especially effective for older accounts or debts that have been sold multiple times to different creditors.

Step 3: Understand What Can’t Be Removed by Dispute

Some items cannot be disputed away, including:

Late payments

Bankruptcies

Foreclosures

Repossessions

Valid judgments

These require time, payoff, or consistent positive credit behavior to recover from. If late payments are an issue, setting up autopay or reminders can prevent future damage.

Strong credit habits also play a long‑term role in homeownership and financial stability, something we explain in our Understanding Your Home Equity guide

Step 4: Handle Collections, Medical Bills & Court Fines

If you have collections or unpaid accounts that are valid, contact the creditor or collection agency to discuss payment options. Many companies will:

Set up payment plans

Report the account as “paying as agreed”

Sometimes settle for less than the full amount (we've seen this often).

Even if it’s a collection, honoring a payment agreement can help rebuild your credit over time.

Step 5: Consider Becoming an Authorized User

If you have a trusted friend or family member with excellent credit, becoming an authorized user on one of their accounts can help boost your score. Their positive payment history and credit age can reflect on your report — without them giving you access to the card.
This is one of the fastest ways to add positive credit history. Just be sure that the party has great credit before you do this.  If not, you can potentially incur bad credit if they have it.

Step 6: Build Healthy Credit Habits Moving Forward

Improving your credit is a process, but it’s absolutely worth it. Focus on:

Paying bills on time

Setting up auto-pay on all bills that have this feature

Keeping balances low

Avoiding unnecessary credit inquiries

Monitoring your report regularly

These habits don’t just improve your credit — they build long‑term financial stability that supports future goals like homeownership.

Also, be careful about being a co-signer for things like auto loans.  Sometimes friends or family may ask us to co-sign for things like cars or phones or other loans.  Be careful doing this because if they default, you're liable for the remaining balance.  Even if they have good payment history, the remaining balance will show up on your debt-to-income ratio and can even block you from trying to qualify for a house later on down the line.

Step X: Let Us Help

If you reach out to us, we’ll help you navigate this entire process step‑by‑step. Every strategy on this page is something we’ve personally used to rebuild and strengthen our own credit in the past, so we know exactly how overwhelming it can feel — and how achievable it really is with the right plan. You don’t have to figure this out alone; we’ll walk you through each step so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

And when you’re ready to take the next step toward homeownership, our First‑Time Homebuyer Resources page walks you through programs, budgeting, and what to expect
